ART THAT MOVES. PHYSICALLY – EMOTIONALLY – SPATIALLY

hey, team.

My name is Michèle Carter Cram. I’m a director and multihyphenate creative commited to making, funding, and sharing art that uplifts community-building as joyful and joy as radical.

My artistic priorities currently revolve around community building and radical joy practices as a manifestation of art for social change. I’m currently located in New York City. I hold a BA in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Theatre from Sarah Lawrence college.

I feel a strong responsibility to prioritize the physical, emotional, and creative wellbeing of my artistic collaborators in my work, regardless of my role. I also have a passion for the intersection of classical heightened text and new devised work, combining my experience as a scholar with a movement background.

My career is a patchwork of experiences that make up who I am today.

I am primarily a director and arts administrator, but my supplementary experience as a writer, stage manager, sound and lighting designer, intimacy coordinator, theatrical combatant, and educator lend a number of unique perspectives to my work. I direct work that is classic in form and cutting edge in creation. My work is inherently queer and neurodivergent.

I’m also an experienced administrator who has worked in the nonprofit theater world as a grants manager, producer, project manager, and researcher since 2020. Currently, I work in development with Treasure Valley Children’s Theater, and recently finished a year with the Juilliard school assisting with interdisciplinary producing in the Office of the President- Creative Enterprise. I’m passionate about supporting work that prioritizes accessibility, equity, creativity, and excellence, and love supporting other artists.

My collaborators:

I have an unlimited metro card and a lot of frequent flier miles. You may have seen me at:

  • The Chain
  • The Tank
  • The Kennedy Center (2024 Directing Intensive)
  • The Juilliard School
  • Treasure Valley Children’s Theater
  • Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival
  • Migration Theory

Beyond my work…

If I’m not at the theater, I can usually be found scaring family and friends with plant based cooking experiments, reading, or arguing about whether or not I really need to buy another expensive cheese.
